National Health Insurance (NHI)

By law,  all Republic of China (Taiwan) citizens must be enrolled in NHI. Foreign nationals who meet NHI regulations and residency requirements must also be insured under the system. Students may visit the benefits, limitations, and terms of coverage on their website.

The benefits package is comprehensive. All necessary medical services are covered. When you visit a doctor, the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) will cover most of your examinations and medication costs. NHIA directly reimburses NHI-contracted medical institutions for the cost related to the medical services they provide to patients. All you need to pay is a small portion of the cost, called a “co-payment.”

All students pay the NHI fee on a monthly basis since NHI came into effect. The monthly fee is NTD826. The payment process works this way. NCCU charges students the NHI fee per semester. The amount of NTD 4,956 will appear as a charge on your tuition bill (NTD826 x 6 Months).

  • Spring : March 1- August 31
  • Fall : September 1 – February 28

The National Health Insurance Administration requires all foreign students to have a continuous stay in Taiwan for 6 months or travel abroad only once (for less than 30 days in the 6-month time span). Before joining the NHI program, you should have your own medical insurance that covers your medical costs.

For the students who enter Taiwan with a Resident Visa, the duration of 6 months starts from the date of arrival. While for students who enter Taiwan with a Visitor Visa, the duration of 6 months starts from the Resident Visa is issued.

If you were already insured by NHI or were insured by NHI before, please contact OIC for NHI enrollment and fee adjustment.

  1. Provide the OIC with your ARC number to track when your NHI will go into effect. Note we are not able to track your NHI effectively without your ARC number. We will notify you by email when your date for eligibility is near.
  2. Upon receiving our notice, send one (1) copy of a passport-sized photo and one (1) copy of your Alien Residence Certificate (ARC) (front side only) to nccunhi@gmail.com. It takes around ten business days to issue your card after submission. Again, an email will be sent to you to inform you of your pick-up date.

How does paying or refunding the NHI premium work? NCCU charges new students a one-time six-month NHI premium charge of NT$4,956. This amount will appear on your tuition bill during your second semester at NCCU, regardless of the date, you become eligible to enroll in the NHI program.

After your first-time payment (and possible refund) is made, an NHI fee of NT$4,956 will be included in your tuition bill on a per-semester basis, for every year you stay on the NHI program through NCCU.

Refund calculation of prepaid premium: NT$826 (monthly premium) x Month(s) uninsured in NHI in the second semester. The amount will be refunded to your bank account on the month of your graduation.

The amount paid (NT$4,956) will be refunded to your bank account on the month of your graduation or withdrawal from NCCU. As a reminder, please remember to purchase overseas insurance during your stay in Taiwan before you are eligible for the NHI program.
