Toronto, Canada - February 11, 2026
At the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto (Devonshire Place), a Chinese New Year event brought together students, academics, and diplomatic representatives for a high-level discussion on Taiwan’s global role in technology, innovation, and policy leadership.
The event featured remarks from Mr. Yi-Peng Liang, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto, accompanied by fellow Taiwanese diplomats, as well as a former Canadian representative to Taiwan. Discussions emphasized Taiwan’s strategic importance in shaping global technology policy, as well as its leadership in innovation, digital governance, and international diplomacy.
A key highlight of the event was the recognition of Taiwan’s higher education system as a driver of global talent and policy expertise. Among the programs highlighted, the International Master Program of Applied Economics and Social Development (IMES) at National Chengchi University was presented as a leading English-taught program. During the event, Christina Jean Louis, a current IMES student, engaged with diplomats and attendees to share her academic experience and the program’s strong emphasis on policy analysis, international collaboration, and applied economic research.
These exchanges underscored the role of IMES students as global representatives of Taiwan’s academic excellence within elite institutions such as the Munk School. The event further highlighted the importance of strengthening academic and policy linkages between Taiwan and Canada.
This gathering reflects the growing recognition of Taiwan’s leadership in global policy and innovation, as well as the potential for deeper collaboration between National Chengchi University and leading international institutions such as the University of Toronto in the future.
